I'd like to think of myself as a relatively bold potential future bride... and I have a friend who wore a floral summer dress for her wedding.

Would I be able to pass up the tradition of a white dress? I've often thought about it when walking by a local designer's store in the market.

... and now for the back story.

My friend J (also not a bride but actively working on research for when her bf does finally propose) and I were cruising around the Landsdowne Wedding Show this weekend. We passed one of the several jewelry booths and she declared "I'll just get *insert name here* an engagement ring". I went on to correct her in saying that guys get wedding bands at the wedding not engagement rings... the moral of that statement is that even though I like to think I'm not particularly traditional, I definitely am with some things.

Now a couple days later, browsing the Ottawa Citizen. I came across this article.

What the article asks is whether or not women are ready to give engagement rings? I know that there are girls out there who do propose, I'm just not sure it's for me.

A new e-friend

Today I made a new e-friend (what I call those new people that I’ve met online but not in person yet) from Pen & Posey. She’s a florist with Trillium Floral Designs in Kanata and is getting married herself.

I should have done this long ago, ok well at least when I got my copy of Martha Stewart's recent Weddings magazine.

I met Maria from Ritzy Bee Events back in January when I was in NYC at the Preston Bailey event. Maria was so nice to my friend K & I. She spent time with us at the party then we met for drink later at The Standard. What a sweet and genuine person!

I thought that quitting both jobs and going to one job would give me more time to commit to my passion/hobby but instead I still seem to be running all over the place doing everything I possibly can to enjoy life.

Part of that is my new job and part of that is weddings...

My first wedding this year was a girl who has become a great friend! (She also has an amazing collection of 80's music) The DJ company, Quality Entertainment, once again stepped it up. L's mum made lots of great cupcakes and the venue which I wasn't sure of before pulled off a great event with great staff.

Once I am given time to relax, I love to read.

I spent the day on Saturday, catching up on my favourite Nora Roberts series, The Bridal Quartet. I really did read it all in one day!

Savour the Moment, tells about wedding baker Laurel's romance with her best friend's brother Del. From reading book's 1 and 2 it wasn't a big surprise that Laurel finds love with her best friend's brother or that he had feelings for her and we already know at the start that they will be together, after all it is a romance novel. The book does give you the in's and out's of good friends getting used to seeing each other in a new light. It's a light, easy read that is easy to get lost in. Perfect for a beautiful day at the beach or in the park.

Now I can stop searching Chapters until November when the final book is released. It's Parker's turn for love next!

While researching my upcoming project (I promise news will follow soon) I went into a little store I love on Dalhousie called The Workshop. It's a great store with unique designers and amazing accessories! The best part of the store is that it focuses on local and Canadian women designers.

The store (as great as it is) is not the point. The point is this little accessory I bought while I was there. It's a little tie necklace, by a company called Tweek. Her stuff sells on Etsy, in Toronto and just the one store in Ottawa. I've been wearing it everywhere and getting tons of compliments.

I don't have a picture of me and mine, but I'll borrow a photo from her Etsy site and hopefully she won't mind too much!

Wouldn't it be cute, if you were a girl and some guy's "best man", same sex wedding & both girls want to wear dresses or even just have your bridesmaids wear them with their dresses. I just wear mine on casual Friday to the office.

I met Julie recently at this fantastic networking event (haha... so I hosted the event), I met a number of great people there but I've had Julie's card in my jacket pocket since that night.

Julie posted some photos from a wedding she did recently, and not only did the pictures catch my eye, they have an amazing story.

Just over a month after their engagement Joey was seriously injured in a motocross accident. Married less than a year later, on their 7th anniversary. It's truely an amazing story. Read it here!

A different kind of "Green" wedding

A Bride and Groom in Wales spent 3 hours being painted green so they could be married dressing as their favourite couple, Shrek and Fiona.

I don't think I could have that patience, but I bet it was a great party.

Ashton Station Bridal

Saturday night I ventured out in the rain and snow (at least we didn't have as much as Calgary).

I headed to Carleton Place to find the new bridal boutique, called Ashton Station Bridal. It was the opening evening for this new exclusive Rivini boutique. It is also the only store in Ottawa that carries these beautiful gowns!

When I went to the event, I was told that the boutique was in an old church. In my head that meant that I pictured the place I was going to as a dark room in a basement. Instead I walked up a set of stairs into a delightful, bright and fresh white room with beautiful dark wood floors. Part of the room set up for a consultation then the back area set up with fitting rooms, large floor to ceiling mirrors and a beautiful church bench from a childhood church.

To add to the excitement of the evening Rivini's designer was on hand providing great insight about her diverse collection and greeting everyone in the room.

Ever since the Networking event I've been a little lax on my blogging responsibilities. I promise to fix that now. With the conference under way and another project on the go I am definitely busy!

urbanfête!

Last night after having “one of those days”, I left straight from work hoping to make it to urbanfête before it closed at 6pm.
I spent most of the walk going over what had gone on that day, everything I had to do that night and then thinking about speaking at our fantastic Sangria night tonight.

All the stress and craziness went away as soon as I walked into the urbanfête store. Owner Christine was finishing up a sale and then gave me a tour of the cute store and then the studio space upstairs. The downstairs area is a little store space that sells sell cardstock, envelopes, clients can come in and get what they need to make their own invitations as well as notebooks, cards and cute accessories. It’s a bright and happy space I don’t think it’s possible to be unhappy or stressed in this environment! The open concept space allows both Kevin and Christine to work in the space, share their ideas, while meeting the needs of their clients.

The best part in my opinion is that when you are having urbanfête create your invitations they meet with you upstairs in the studio and you can see right away what your invitation looks like, with your names and your information. It feels real right away.

I went to the store intending on buying a few sheets of paper and left with lots more! It’s a great store and the friendly, happy ownership will make this business go far!

For Cake's Sake

Last weekend, after several tries... I finally met up with For Cake Sake.

I met Leigh the first time at the Wed by Hand Show. I'm telling you, that was the show to be at this year! Leigh is very sweet and quiet and has a genuine passion for making her cakes. The prices are amazong too! You will be surprised!

I wish I had got a photo of the first cake of hers that caught my eye a fondant bride on the top of the cake being rescued by her firefighter groom. It was so cute! This time I brought my own camera so I take some photos to share with them!

Back at the end of February I attended a wedding show called Wed By Hand put together by Beyond Events. What a great show it was! I was introduced to many great, local, independent wedding vendors! No Costco invites there!

The invitations that did blow me away were the beautiful letterpress invites by We Do Printing. The invitations are all handmade with a Heidelberg Letterpress. Ian explained to me the complicated process that goes into creating each individual template (and they do it themselves) providing amazing quality! I know I would make a mistake explaining it.

I also love that their paper is all eco-friendly cotton paper... one paper was even made from recycled jeans!

Shop InStyle for a Cure!

Weddings InStyle has a beautiful loft style venue right in the middle of the Byward Market. It was the perfect place to hold a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and place to show off White Haute Bridal's beautiful collection!

Last Thursday Jill and Amanda of Weddings InStyle along with Dana from White Haute Bridal hosted the fundraiser, raising $2000 for the Foundation and Dana sold 3 dresses on the spot. What a success!

There was jewellery was on display from Frash Femme and Stella & Dot, little mini cupcakes from The Flour Shoppe and a photobooth from Mastermind Events. Melanie from m photography, was slipping through the crowds taking all the photos. I've seen them already and they are beautiful!!

Congratulations ladies!

In true Ottawa fashion, I even ran into a bride-to-be from High School! Congratulations A!

In a fashion that is becoming quite normal to me, I started this morning with another meeting over coffee. This week it was with Beyond Events to discuss a networking event we are putting together for Ottawa Wedding Professionals.

Beyond Events sent out a little message last week about interesting networking events, one of which was a Sangria tasting. I'm a little partial to sangria and I thought it would be a great idea! Just a few hours later messages were going back and forth with interest and possible dates.

After the meeting, it is safe to tell you that the time and date have been set: Wednesday April 21, 2010 at Lago Bar & Grill.

Little Cakes

Wednesday night I attended one of Little Cakes monthly tasting nights! Trust me their business is taking off! They hadn't event hosted this March's tasting by the time the next one for April had already filled up.

It was definitely worth the trip out to Kanata! Dozen's of lovely little cupcakes in a variety of different flavours, the trick was to just pick one favourite. I finally decided on my 2 favourites... Lemon Cranberry and Brownie. My boyfriend, who was lucky enough to come with me, picked the Banana Rama as his favourite.

I asked some questions (and eavesdropped on other peoples) after I had made my tasting rounds to understand a little more about the finer details. You can mix and match flavours, change the icing on any kind to another flavour, add fondant toppers, pretty little silver beads. All their cupcakes are made from scratch and fresh, the day before your event. When packaged properly you can keep the leftovers for brunch the next day and the ones with fruit in them stay fresh a little longer.

I wanted to say hello before I left (with the sugar coma just mintes from setting in) I had to interrupt because there was a line of people wanting quotes and placing orders.

Go Green!

This past weekend in Ottawa was the Go Green! Expo.

A great idea, free admission (a suggested donation going to World Water Day) and lots of vendors on hand to teach us how to be a little more gentle on our environment. Well it would be great to be eco-friendly completely, it's not always feasible so look for ways that you can make little changes to contribute.

I came across some great products by Green Beaver, who carries my new favourite lip gloss... and incase my opinion isn't good enough the same lip shimmers were featured in Canadian Living magazine. My mum and I are very much enjoying the organic cranberry hand soap as well. To add to how great this company is... that they are located in Hawkesbury, just outside of Ottawa and their products are in health food stores everywhere!

A cute little treat I found that could be used as a favour was the Clean Air Tree Kit made by the World Clean Air Foest Initiative (WCAFI) with every tree kit that you buy, they plant a tree as well. Just think of all that Clean Air!

At the expo I had the opportunity to try lots of great vegan and organic foods including a fantastic organic ice cream by Mapleton's Organic (the mint chip was delicious!). My highlight was visiting my new friends from Auntie Loo's Treats, watching her seminar on how to veganize Grandma's recipes, eating cupcakes & walnut coffee cake (yes this is a theme for me) and checking out the amazing Nintendo cake!

Eco-Beautiful Weddings just launched their second issue and it is beautiful!

This issue features some great articles! Going Green is Sexy and Organic Spirits are just two of my favourites, great organic cocktail selections like the Mule de Fresca are great for any occasion.

Eco-Beautiful Weddings is putting together a seminar up here in Canada! The seminar will be held in Toronto, I know it's a bit of a drive for us Ottawa folk, but if enough people are interested, perhaps we can make a road trip of it for a Tuesday in May!

We are looking for all types of wedding professionals who would like to participate! Hopefully at least 1 photographer, 1 decorator, 1 florist.

The seminar is $200, as long as you register before March 8. On March 8th, the price goes up! White Haute Bridal

I had the perfect start to my day off on Friday, when I met Dana of White Haute Bridal for coffee at the local Bridgehead coffee.

Dana has had a very busy year so far, getting married last fall and starting her own business in January. After thinking that she may need a new dress last minute and searching the classifieds, Dana was inspired to open what is now Ottawa's only consignment bridal shop. Currently, Dana is operating out of her home in Kanata by appointment only, but not for long! Her business is growing, with over 60 dresses so far, and looking at opening a retail space with her seamstress partner Becky. They will be offering consignment dresses, custom gowns and select lines of gowns.

Dana's shop is just taking off! With her genuine attitude, honesty and true passion for what she does White Haute will be around for a very long time!

My new reason to get to the gym!

I want to get back in shape enough that I can take part in one of m photography's beautiful boudoir sessions.

Melanie's sessions include a champagne brunch, hair and make-up session and some pictures of yourself from all the most flattering angles. Melanie's great eye leaves everyone looking their very best!

Doire Photography

My afternoon meeting on Saturday was with another very talented Ottawa photographer. Melanie Doire, of Doire Photography. Melanie started her photography career in Kingston, Ontario before moving up to Ottawa. She told me that being in Ottawa has been very good for her, business is blooming as she is coming up on her 5 year anniversary in October!

Melanie told me that she is really looking forward to attending a workshop with Jerry Ghionis, in Toronto this summer! Catch her while you can!

My goal as a photographer is to create lifelong memories and build lasting relationships with my clients. For many of my clients I tend to become the photographer to capture all the major milestones in their lives, and I want to make good photography financially available to people while still earning a living myself.

“How to get free photography for life”

I started a referral program to encourage word of mouth advertising for my past clients.

For every successful referral (4 or more hours wedding booked) they give to me, my referring client receives a free 1 hour photo session that they can use towards any style of photography. This way, a small but steady supply of referrals would pretty much give my past clients free photography for life.

I had two very interesting meetings on Saturday, the first one was a little unplanned. I had been wanting to visit a local bakery since it's opening and had either been too lazy or it was too cold to make the walk from my apartment. So Saturday morning I rounded up my boyfriend with the promise of baked goods and headed off to Auntie Loos' Treats. Auntie Loos' is little vegan bakery on Bronson, run by Mandy Loo and her very talented team.

Following the trend I've had recently, the whole team was very friendly. Mandy told me all about her products, business and how she came to open her own little store. Kate showed me some cupcakes she was working on for a bachelorette party that evening. Her specialty is vegan baked goods, however she also makes gluten-free goodies, all the treats are priced the same as she doesn't think that anyone with a special diet should feel punished.

After a nice little visit, I left the store with a great sample of goods: cupcakes, scones, brownies and cinnamon buns. Little did I know, but we had made it for the Cinnamon Bun Saturday (the only time during the week they are made).

You really should get in and try them, you don't need to be vegan to enjoy! Trust me you will not regret it! (Earl Grey Lemon cupcakes are to die for)

Eco-Couture

Thanks to some very interesting influences @ecobeautiful & @GreenWed, I have become increasingly interested in Eco-Friendly weddings and have been visiting all sorts of sites with "Green" tips.

Today I came across this designer out of Atlanta, Georgia, Maria Boszilkov. The best part is that on top of the sustainable materials, 5% is donated to environmental causes, that's amazing!

What a great eco-chic dress! I love it!!

Coffee (and Tea) with AMBPhoto

Yesterday I had the pleasure of sitting down for a little chat with Anne-Marie of AMBPhoto, recently had a launch party with two other Ottawa businesses First Kiss Films and be sweet chocolate.

I have to say I love these little meetings because I am learning so much about some very interesting people.

Meeting Anne-Marie was like catching up with an old friend and she has such an exciting year coming up that I found myself excited for her. Her year will include a wedding in Italy, one in Cuba and a dream workshop in Mexico with industry speakers including Abby Larsen of Style Me Pretty! Anne-Marie studied English and Fine Arts at Bishop’s University which she followed up with a diploma in Photography at Algonquin, and then she discovered her love for photographing people. Weddings specifically, she described to me, were a day that combines everything she loves to photograph people, food and different locations. She is so genuine and professional with a true pride in her work. The handmade CD albums are a beautiful finishing touch to show just how much she cares.

I know she will be successful!

Full Bloom Floral Design

The Wed by Hand show introduced me to several very talented people, including Erin of Full Bloom Floral Design. Erin has spent the last 10 years living in Vancouver. In Vancouver, Erin worked started her own event planning company where they also provided event decor and florals. That was when she starting taking workshops from amazing international floral designers and artists, including an intensive 6 week floral design school studdying under Hitomi Gilliam. Now she is focusing on floral design as it is what she truly loves and is most passionate about. Recently, I got a chance to ask her a few questions.

1. What do you love most about designing?

I love how something starts out looking a certain way and then ends up looking like something so different. As I am designing there is a flow and as I am in it I sometimes don't even know where is will go. I love taking something and using it in a different way that we wouldn't normally think of.

2. Your designs have beautiful shapes and styles, what influences you?

The flowers are my main inspiration - their colours, shapes and textures inspire me.

3. You focus on being Eco-friendly and using local vendors. If you could give brides one tip to be more eco friendly what would it be?

Try to buy local - even request for it with your caterer, wine/beer, etc. I think it is so important to support our local community and small businesses.

4. The Eternal Tree is such a beautiful ideas, how did you get started with it?

Many years ago I had a couple give out tree seedling as their guest favors...I loved that idea. I remember taking one from that wedding and planing it in my courtyard (in Vancouver we had courtyards...no backyards). Everytime I looked at that tree I had great thoughts of that couple and how much they loved each other. So - I started on my own planting tree seedlings on behalf of my couples and telling them where I planted it so they could visit it and watch it grow just like their relationship. I also like the idea of me giving back to the environment after taking so much in flowers.

5. When you are working, what kind of atmosphere do you have in your studio? do you have a favourite artist or type of music you listen to while you work?

I always listen to music and all kinds of music. I put my ipod on shuffle and let it play. I love right now A Fine Frenzy, Tegan and Sara and old work from Kings of Leon.

Another big day for same-sex couples!

A new law took effect in Mexico City Thursday which allows same-sex marriages. The same law allows same-sex couples to adopt.

It seems so natural to us here in Canada, but in the rest of the world there is still a struggle for the same rights. The last couple days show that the world is starting to change!

On the small scale, it's been a crazy day of change for me... accept one job resign from another. It's a big change to me.

BUT!

In Washington D.C. today was a day of BIG change! Today was the first day that the U.S. Capital recognized same sex marriage. Hopefully soon the rest of the country will follow suit!

My meeting with X Photography

This morning was supposed to be the first meeting for Bridget from X Photography. I spoiled the meeting a little after I spotted her helping out another vendor at the Wed by Hand show this past weekend! What great team work. I couldn't just walk by, I had to say hello, so instead of just meeting this morning it was our opportunity to just sit down and have a chat.

I met with both Briget and her husband Rashaad, the husband and wife team behind X Photography and also to be noted parents of 6! Officially in the business for a year and a half, but they have had a passion for photography for years. They really make it work! These two make a great team, even shooting together. With their wedding photography packages you get 2 photographers! Rashaad goes with the groom and his wedding party and Bridget goes with the ladies to catch all the special moments getting ready!

Our meeting turned into a surprise photo session. (well it was a surprise idea to me!) So much fun! I can tell you that they are so nice and genuine that the smiles they get are real! I can't wait to see my pictures and post them for you to see, as well as feature some of the weddings that they have done!

Twitter has already given me an amazing opportunity to attend Preston Bailey's book launch event in New York City, now it has introduced me to Katie Martin (@Greenwed on Twitter) and her beautiful online magazine Eco-Beautiful Weddings (@ecobeautiful)

So much to do! I can't belive how busy life is these days, time is just flying by!

I am making time is my crazy schedule to get out and meet all sorts of talented Ottawa people.

My first wedding show this year was a little one at The Keg Manor, also my first time in the location and I was surprised by just how big it is!

The highlights for me were:

Chef Jason Laurin from Essence Catering (definitely at the top of the list) who provided several tasty treats, including an incredible iced wine gelee topped with a raspberry filet and pepper. After speaking with him for several minutes he had both my mum and I ready to hire him. After talking about menus, I learned his prices were great too.

Wedecor, another amazing display, has added candy buffets to their list of many services. I've seen their work before, a good, professional company and they won me over again with their little champagne bubble candies. The Wedecor team does everything including backdrops, linens, floral design, invitations and lighting. I will be learning more about them.

The last food related highlight for me was crazyforchocolate.ca. I love chocolate, but this went beyond just the chocolates to the little boxes that were on display for the favours, beautifully boxed in so many syles and colours. The best idea for me was all the little boxes, placed into cake form with beautiful ribbons holding each layer in place. What a great idea!

The last big highlight for me was a little venue called At The School House. They host receptions and ceremonies for up to 70 people. The venue offers stand-up style reception packages that include everything including your flowers. My favourite I think was the brunch reception, what a nice way to spend your day! The added bonus with this stop for me was to see a portfolio of photos from m photography such beautiful and stylish photos. I've been following her on Twitter and I hope I get to meet her soon.

I have so many emails to send, and so many people I look forward to dealing with. Next stop Wed by Hand next weekend at the Courtyard Marriot in the market!

Trash the Dress

I first heard about Trash the Dress photo sessions at a wedding show last year. My friend and I were browsing for photographers for her upcoming wedding, and one had a trash the dress session that could replace an engagement shoot in her packages.

This got me interested, you can create very cool photos, and it's something that you can do with your dress after your big day.

Many of the sessions I have seen have been in water, or in a city with graffiti... then I came across this the other day on google.

Is this going too far? Could any of you really burn your dress?

A couple from Philadelphia recently celebrated an anniversary that is longer than most people's life span. They have been married for 80 years. They have kids, grandkids, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren!

My weekend recap

So my actual return from NYC was late Friday night, and I worked job number 2 last night, so here I am catching up! This post will be long and I'm sorry, but it does have pictures.

We caught a 6am flight to New York and that was only the beginning of a very long day.

After a day of shopping and a little nap my friend K and I got ourselves all done up to head over to the Preston Bailey book launch party for his newest book celebrations at the Armory on Lexington. We were greeted by Mr. Bailey's Director of Communications, then greeted by Marcy Bloom who introduced me to several bloggers and fantastic business women, including a new friend (I hope I can call her that) Maria, of Ritzy Bee in Washington D.C.

The decor was gorgeous! Lights, flowers and a runway that was set up like a printing press starting from the ceiling at the back of the rooms splitting the room in half. Mr. Bailey greeted everyone himself at the door after his interviews were done. There was a fashion show, Martha Walsh and Gloria Gaynor performed some of their hits before the runway was opened up into a dance floor.

The food was delicious, servers passed beautifully plated hors d'oeuvres (philly cheese steak spring rolls, caviar, lamb and braised short ribs) and a beautiful dessert buffet that had miniture versions of everyones favourite desserts! The s'mores and lemon meringue pies deserved special mention for me!

A Facebook invite?

After you decide to get married, you set a date, decide who you want to invite, pick a venue that is suitable for the size of group, style and budget... then you send out some invitations.

Yes, this is a very simplified description, but it ended at my point... sending out invitations.

I was checking facebook as usual the other day when I came across the fact that one of my friends had accepted an invitation to someone's wedding... by Facebook; my friend will be attending Susie and Johnny's wedding. (names have been changed to protect the not so innocent)

While I do understand that we now live in a digital world and people do most things on their computers, Blackberry's and iPhone's, but when is it too much. I have my opinions, mostly that some things deserve more than a Facebook invite, do some people really not agree and think that it's a great way to save some money? I understand RSVP'ing by email. Maybe even creating a Facebook page after the fact to share photos and share best wishes with the couple, but inviting people that way doesn't seem right.

What are your thoughts? Is anyone in favour of using Facebook? If so why? Maybe your story can sway my opinion.

A while back I posted about a location in Toronto where brides can donate their used wedding dresses. I thought it was convenient that you could just mail your dress to them. That was until I learned the other day that Ottawa wedding planner Stacey Price of Marry Me Productions and Jamie Johnson owner of Groovy Linen Rentals have started their own project.

Ottawa Brides now have a place to donate their dresses and all the proceeds of these dresses resold goes to Breast Cancer research! What an amazing thing!

A friend of mine recently introduced me to a local photographer, I'm a big fan of her work.

We've been discussing putting up some of her photography on here and here is what Christina had to say about her company:

Tia Photography was started 3 years ago, it is my own self stared company and I am the only photographer, Tia is me! It is my childhood nick name my Grandmother and family called me, so my company is very close to my heart!

I have been shooting, self taught since I was 17 years old. I lived in the country and practiced on my surroundings and my new daughter. I worked in Social Services until making the career change and going to Algonquin College and graduating in May 2009. I decided it was time and my company was started and has been going ever since! I shoot family portraits, maternity, newborn, couples, and weddings. I have a studio in my home. I feel totally, 100 percent in love with what I do and soooo grateful! My clients have advertised for me the past 3 years and kept my company growing! I am so lucky. It's been hard, but all worth it.

Cosmetic procedures for a wedding?? I instantly thought this was going too far. I thought about it and teeth whitening, ok. Botox, I don't really like the idea... but surgery for a wedding? That seems like too much.

I knew I couldn't possibly be the last hopeless romantic out there.

A little while ago I wrote about an article I saw on CNN that suggested that people were just agreeing to get married over casual discussion, leaving out the surprise and romance.

The other day I read this post on another blog site, What Junebug Loves. Laurel, a Seattle, WA photographer tells the story of a proposal/engagement soot that she was recently involved in.

It sounds like a silly idea, a silly title for a silly movie. While, my mum caught it on t.v. not so long ago and told me about this cute little movie she just saw. Turns out that it was filmed in our fantasic city, although, according to the film they were in Boston.

There are some great shots of a picnic by the canal, a great centretown home, and an apartment building on Bronson.

It's not an Oscar Award winning film, but it is a movie that entertained me for the evening. It was empowering for girls, with a strong message that, we don't NEED a man to make us happy. BUT that's not the whole message. The movie goes on to show that being true to yourself, with or without someone else, is the important part.

what a pessimistic view...

The people writing the "Relationships" columns on the CNN page all seem to be a little jaded, today while I was reading I came across this article Are Marriage Proposals Dead?

The article is suggesting that the idea of a proposal isn't the same now. That people talk about getting married, shop for a ring together and that's it. Kind of the way Carrie and Mr. Big did in the Sex and the City movie.

Are we losing all our romance, the element of surprise, the grand gestures? I really hope not. I've admitted before to being a hopeless romantic, I've had friends tell tales of scavenger hunts, grand speeches, proposals on hikes in the mountains and renting of skating rinks. Is it wrong to want to be surprised and swept off our feet? I want a story that I will be able to tell forever and that will make my friends jealous.

I think maybe I just need to cut my self off of romance novels, and cheesy romantic movies... or maybe I'll just hold on to my hope that romance isn't completely dead.

Hi everyone!

Sorry for my little disappearance in the last week or so. I was crazy with work and then off on a well deserved girl's weekend with my mum and sister to the fine city of Boston.

Why is it that everyone's reaction is "Why Boston??" It was a random choice that brought us to Boston (and the hopes of seeing my favourite football team, which didn't happen this time).

We did some of the tourist stuff, took in a lot of American history! Also, quite important to a good girl's weekend, we found some shopping time.

Walking around after dinner on our first night there was a store that just drew me in! For the unbride, or just a bride who is looking for a great vintage shop please check out designer Michal Negrin. This store located in Faneuil Hall Marketplace is full of romantic and feminine accessories, clothes and paper products, including a bridal line.

A showroom by appointment only is located in Port Hope, ON.

One day last week I was browsing my favourite blogs when I came upon this wedding posted on theunbride.com. Laura and Susie are a Maine couple that were getting married, just before before the passing of Question 1.

Have you thought about donating it?

The Bride's Project in Toronto has created a great way to give back after your wedding day. They take used dresses and accessories as well as corporate donations and sell them and lower prices to brides to be. The great thing about the Brides Project is that the money they raise goes to help children and adults with cancer.

A cute little idea that they promote, is leaving little notes with your dress for the next bride to wear it. The note will give them a little understanding of where your dress came from and why you donated it.

I think it's a great idea! You don't even have to be in Toronto or go to Toronto to contribute. They have information on their page about the beset way to send your dresses to them in the mail.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear and would be the best dressed mother-of -the-bride ever! A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!

Jennifer asked her step mom to exchange it, but she refused. "Absolutely not. I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it," she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, "Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day."

A few days later, they went shopping and did find another gorgeous dress. When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked
her mother, "Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, "Of course I do, dear. I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding..."

Ok so my new little romance novel addiction of the Bridal Quartet, maybe not be unfinished from book to book. But I want to read more.

Last night I did something a little stupid. Knowing about my long day with both jobs, I picked up my book... and didn't put it down until it was done.

Emma and Jack lived happily ever after... of course only after he made a mistake and she had to forgive him... and in the fashion of romance novels, we now have 2 best friends engaged in 6 months of book time.

Next book is out in May 2010, so I will have to find other things to keep me busy. I'm pretty sure that won't be a problem.

This past weekend Ottawa Wedding Planner Stacey Price hosted a fundraiser for Breast Cancer, Something White for Something Right. The event encouraged women to come out in their wedding gowns, or simply wear all white and raised about $5,000.00

Something tells me that this is an event that will be around again next year! Congratulations to Stacey, her team and all the brides that participated!

Bed of Roses

I spent a very lazy Sunday, when I had many other things I should have or could have been doing, reading book number 2. Bed of Roses.

These books have a great way of sucking you into a world that, although it doesn't exist, feels like it does.

Emma is falling in love with Jack, who is not a commitment guy but finds himself falling in love with Emma. Will they make it... it's a romance novel.. so of course they will, but I am definitely enjoying reading about their journey.

I was browsing around the Internet, looking for new and interesting things to post, when I came across this article.

Although they aren't from Ottawa, this couple from the London, Ontario area did something that just touched my heart. A second marriage for both parties, they already had everything they needed so they gave back to an organization that had helped them in the past. Both the couple and their guests did an amazing thing.

So I've started reading the second book kin the Bride Quartet series by Nora Roberts... Bed of Roses.

Proving to be as addictive as the previous novel, I have been sitting around reading it whenever I get a chance. This time it's Emmaline's (the florist) turn to find love. Will see find it with Jack, her best friend's brother's best friend??

I was browsing CNN, as I tend to do everyday. The headlines, entertainment then the living sections. I came across this article.

Change your name after marriage - Why?

I find it funny (odd not haha) that in a day when we live in a free country and have so many options that someone's name choice after they get married could be an issue. Oddly, it's not even the first time it has come up this week.

The definition of feminism is that it is the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. Under this definition, I consider myself feminist, equality is the goal. I do not see taking the name of a person one has chosen to spend their life with as a negative thing. Is it wrong for a strong woman with a career and an identity of my own to want to take their husband's name when and they get married? In my opinion I would still know exactly who I am and I consider it just another stage in my life.

Keeping a "maiden name"or "birth name" for professional reasons or for personal reasons makes sense to me. I even get hyphenating names, creating a new name or even a man taking his wife's name. Why create more issues when we have much more important things to worry about.

* Useless fact: In the middle ages, before it was the husbands name that was used, it was the family name of the higher class family.

... and something blue

There are some traditions that are falling by the wayside... others are sticking around and some are just fun. The idea of something blue is a great and fun way to add some colour to your wedding.

If you are having a wedding with a blue theme it can match your decor, if not it can be a great and creative way to add a burst of colour.

I went and did a little "window shopping" on Etsy - a great site for handmade accessories and other items. Here is some of what I found:

and probably the first book I've finished in a while.

My first venture into romance novels and it was great. I can't wait to start the second one... but wait, that means I'll have to wait for the 3rd and 4th books!

I've always known I was one of those hopeless romantics. The girls that movies like The Notebook are written for. This book was great in that it didn't have the grand romantic gestures, just the little things that make someone realize they are in love. The main love interest that listens, is patient, cooks, stands up to us when we are being stupid... but can hold your hand just that right way and look at you like you are the only thing that matters.

Ahhh... romance.

Everyone should read this book, if you are looking for a nice fun read that will leave you smiling.

Vision in White

My Nora Roberts book is coming along well. I can see how people just keep reading and reading these romance novels. They are really easy to relate to, the characters seem like normal people and the romantic interest seems just like the guy that all woman want to find... so far anyway.

The story is based around 4 friends who own a wedding company called Vows. Parker is the planner and owns the venue, Laurel is a chef and does the cakes, Emma is a florist and Mac the main character of this novel is the photographer. She reconnects with Carter, a nerdy yet intriguing guy from the past when he shows up to support his sister in a consultation.

I can honestly say that I don't want to put it down at night.

My friend just introduced me to a new series of books written by Nora Roberts. I've never read anything by her before but it's a series based on a group of friends who have this wedding planning company. My friend thinks I'll like these little romance novels... The first one is called Vision in White.

Weddings are full of traditions and superstitions, it's suggested that maybe we are drifting away from the things we "have" to do.

As I was doing some research the other day I came up on an article suggesting that more and more brides are selling their dresses after the fact.

I call it focused, not obsessed...

Just more of me and my opinion on the drama that is Justina McCaffrey's career these days. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just amazing what she has been going through and I really do feel bad because I truly believe that she is so creative and good at what she does...

While Ms. McCaffrey is working hard to build back her career, it's unfortunate that every time she does create a new dress, it's reported as a Justina McCaffrey designed dress. Not everyone knows her story and people still think of the little boutique on Sussex; not the woman who put all the work and effort into creating the dress.

When you google Justina McCaffrey, sure her new site comes up first but right after it is the brand that everyone is so familiar with.

Here's what I think, (and I hope Ms. McCaffrey sees this, I would LOVE to help see her beautiful dresses become as famous as they were, with her getting the credit) what Ms. McCaffrey needs is a new brand. Somewhere she can start again. I love the idea of the Phoenix, rising from the ashes to become something new... there's a beautiful constellation named after it, the branding of stars and feathers reminds me of one of those amazing dresses from the fashion show years ago. Again, maybe over stepping my bounds as a complete nobody in the fashion world but she needs new photos of her new dresses. I volunteer my friend and I to come in and do it for her. We are good with our cameras, I promise.

The Enroute magazine has just come out with this year's Top 10 New Restaurants in Canada. Ottawa has not one but 2 restaurants on the list!

A wedding in paradise.

Destination weddings are quickly growing in popularity, I just attended one in Hawaii this August, a beautiful ceremony and a perfect day, I couldn't have wished for more for Graeme and Danielle!

This is a time when a wedding coordinator makes a huge difference. Using someone in that city, or someone who is in your city but can take the time to find the best vendors for you is really important to making your day the best it can be.

Wedding Coordinators are also great for destination weddings because they can make sure that all the requirements are met for your marriage to be legal and transfer back to Canada. There are different requirements for each country, some require blood tests, others require you to be in the country a certain amount of time before the wedding. A coordinator can make sure that all of these details are taken into consideration.

Why do people hire a wedding coordinator?

People hire wedding planners for many different reasons. Wedding planning takes a lot of time, these days our lives are busy and we are so quick paced that someone who can focus their time and energy into the research will put that time back into your schedule.

Perhaps the bride and groom are planning the wedding from out of town, someone who knows the area and the vendors is a great help.

Many brides don't know where to start, are unfamiliar with the industry they need guidance and the skills of an organized coordinator, there are a lot of details to cover?

A wedding coordinator that is associated with your venue is a great help to ensure that everything at the venue is correct, however, their job stays at the venue. They don't coordinate your flowers, linens and any extra touches.

The most important reason in my mind for a coordinator, is for the day of your wedding. Who will be responsible for setting up the decor, making sure everyone has their flowers, all those little details that make your day run smoothly. It is so important for the bride to be able to enjoy her wedding day, and do you really want your bridal party and your family members running around, or do you want them to enjoy your day too?

True Love

So really this blog is about weddings... tonight is less about weddings and more about what goes into the successful marriage.

After a busy night at the market restaurant I work at, I decided to stop in at one of my favourite places, Zoe's Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier (which does host a number of Ottawa's weddings and top events) to unwind and listen to the beautiful music.

I was inspired to write by this beautiful and classy couple that come in every so often. They must be in their late seventies, they come in, have a late dinner and then dance to Natalie's beautiful music. They are so in love and it gives all the staff and patrons hope that true love is out there.

It's just one of the forms of love I saw tonight, new couples, married couples, people who have just attended a wedding in the hotel and people just loving to sit and listen to Natalie sing and play the piano.

Love really is all around us.

War of the Rosettes

A couple weeks ago there was a very interesting article in the Ottawa Citizen about Ottawa's bridal icon, Justina McCaffrey. Over the last couple years she has been going through a hard time.

The article talks about, the boutique being bought in 2007, by her then brother-in-law, and in 2008 Justina being denied access to the store with her name on it. It also quotes Bridal boutique owner Newell Fox, of Solutions Bridal in Florida, who has continued to carry McCaffrey gowns since Justina left the company and says the "design hasn't dropped a bit."

When I was younger I used to stand outside that little boutique with the beautiful dresses in the window. In 2004, working on a Fashion Show in the market, I had the opportunity to dress a couple of the models in these amazing gowns. It was quite an experience for me. Now walking by the store the dresses are not as beautiful or exciting. Is this a change in style from year to year, or a reflection of the change in ownership?

My first Post

Another wedding season has passed. This was a good one for me though, a bit of a Renaissance for me. No longer a hopeless romantic without an outlet, I have a fantastic boyfriend, my aunt got married for the first time at 50 and I have had the opportunity to brush off the wedding magazines and start helping a few of my friends plan their upcoming nuptuals.

That's what brought me to creating this site. I've been trying to get into wedding planning for years, the industry excites me! I've been trying to find a good resource for Ottawa brides to go to, feel comfortable asking questions and getting the answers they are looking for. What venues are good options for them? How do these colour match? How much should I be spending on photography? Plus great ideas for do-it yourself projects to help keep the budget down. I also wanted to find a place to show Ottawa vendors, we have some great ones here!
